United and Marriott promo: Select elites can enjoy bonus rewards on flights and hotel stays

Since the inception of Marriott Bonvoy in 2018, Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members have been eligible for United Airlines’ entry-level Premier Silver status through the RewardsPlus partnership. Likewise, United Premier Gold, Platinum, 1K and Global Services members have been eligible for Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.

While this partnership has been a way for mid- and upper-tier United MileagePlus members to secure Marriott status (and upper-tier Marriott elite members to secure entry-level United status), it hasn’t offered an incentive beyond that to do business with the brand.

For a limited time, that has changed.

From now until Aug. 31, Marriott Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador members, along with United Premier Gold, Platinum, 1K and Global Services members, can earn extra United miles when they stay at Marriott properties and bonus Marriott points when they fly with United.

Here’s what you need to know about this new offer.

Earn bonus Marriott points and United miles

MARRIOTT

To be eligible for the promotion, you must first link your Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus accounts:

  • Members with Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite or Ambassador Elite status can enroll in the program at this link to receive United MileagePlus Premier Silver status.
  • Members with United MileagePlus Premier Gold, Platinum or 1K status can enroll in the program at this link to receive Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status.

Once linked, the member can sign up for the promotion (click here for the registration page) and will earn 750 bonus points on each unique United itinerary and 500 bonus miles on each eligible Marriott stay through Aug. 31. These accruals are in addition to your standard earnings in the two programs, and you don’t need to have status in both programs to participate.

If you booked your flights using miles or a combination of miles and money, you won’t receive the bonus Marriott points. Likewise, redemption stays at Marriott properties won’t trigger the bonus United miles; you must stay on a qualifying paid rate.

In addition, any eligible stays must be completed by Aug. 31, with at least one night checked in before that date.

Terms and conditions to be aware of

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

Bonvoy members must set their earning preference to hotel points instead of airline miles to receive bonus points for United flights. In addition, this bonus applies once for each eligible itinerary. As a result, a round-trip United flight would only earn you 750 Marriott points — no matter the price. In addition, award tickets or those booked with a combination of miles and money aren’t eligible.

Price also doesn’t factor into the mileage you can earn on a Marriott stay, as a $100 stay at a budget Marriott brand would earn the same 500 United miles as a $2,000 stay at a St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton. Nevertheless, it only takes a few seconds to register, so there’s no harm in doing so.

If you had flights or stays booked before July 1 (the start of the promotion), you can still receive the bonus points or miles — as long as your flight or hotel stay begins before Aug. 31.

Check out the promotion’s landing page for the full terms and conditions.

Bottom line

This promotion with Marriott and United resembles the partnership between American Airlines and Hyatt, allowing elite members to earn additional points when transacting with either company. Hyatt elite members can earn bonus World of Hyatt points for American flights (1 point per dollar spent), while American elite members can earn extra AAdvantage miles for Hyatt stays (1 mile per dollar). Additionally, they frequently offer status matches or fast-track offers.

However, the Hyatt-American integration applies to all elite members in both programs, whereas this is limited to higher-tier elite members.

That said, it’s great to see a new offer for frequent travelers to earn even more rewards on their trips.
