In September 2022, the list of Marriott Bonvoy credit cards grew with two new additions. In many ways, the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card from Chase (the two new cards) are very similar. You could be forgiven for thinking they’re the same card.

While more similar than different, the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy and the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful cards do vary in some benefits.

Let’s look at the similarities and differences between the Bevy and Bountiful cards so you can understand which one is better suited for your wallet.

Benefits common to both cards

Before we discuss how they differ, here’s what the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy and Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful cards have in common:

  • Welcome offer: Both cards currently have the same bonus offer, which provides 125,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of cardmembership. TPG values each bonus at $1,050.
  • Type of points earned: Both cards earn Marriott Bonvoy points. There are many ways to use these points, but the most common will be for award stays at Marriott Bonvoy properties around the globe.
  • Annual fee: You’ll pay $250 per year to keep your Bountiful or Bevy card (see rates and fees of the Bevy card)
  • Marriott elite status: You’ll receive complimentary Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy each year thanks to carrying either of these cards. Gold Elite status provides benefits like bonus points on each stay, late checkout and upgraded rooms — though not to suites.
  • Other Marriott-related benefits: You’ll also receive 15 elite night credits in your Marriott Bonvoy account each year, helping you work toward higher status levels. Plus, on each paid stay at a Marriott Bonvoy-participating property, you’ll receive 1,000 bonus points. TPG values these points at $8.40. Lastly, you also have the ability to earn a free night award (worth up to 50,000 points) by spending $15,000 on either card during a calendar year.
  • Travel protections: Both cards can provide reimbursement when your luggage is lost or delayed on a trip that you paid for with this card. Additionally, both cards can reimburse you for expenses related to delays during your travel. However, the terms and amounts for these benefits differ.
  • Purchase protection and extended warranty: While the time limits and dollar amounts differ, both cards can protect purchases that you paid for with the card.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Neither card will charge you for making purchases in another currency or outside the U.S. (see rates and fees of the Bevy card).
  • Earning structure: Both cards will provide 6 points per dollar at hotels and resorts participating in Marriott Bonvoy and 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 spent in the card’s bonus categories each year. Those categories are dining and supermarkets (note that the Bevy card limits these bonus earnings to U.S. supermarkets only and takeout/delivery services in the U.S. only). You’ll earn 2 points per dollar on other purchases.

New applicants can earn 125,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of cardmembership. TPG values this bonus at $1,050.

Rewards

You’ll earn 6 points per dollar at Marriott Bonvoy hotels and resorts and 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 of combined purchases each year at U.S. supermarkets and on dining (which includes restaurants worldwide and takeout/delivery services in the U.S.). You’ll earn 2 points per dollar on other purchases.

Since TPG values Marriott points at 0.84 cents each, this represents a 5.04%, 3.36% or 1.68% return on spending for the earning rates above. After surpassing the $15,000 spending cap for dining and U.S. supermarkets, your earning rate will drop to 2 points per dollar until the next calendar year.

Other benefits

Cardmembers can also take advantage of Amex Offers. These targeted offers can provide bonus points or statement credits on your upcoming purchases, helping you to save money or reach your next award redemption faster.

Additionally, travel protections on the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card can help you if something goes wrong during a trip. There is trip delay insurance* for trips delayed by more than 12 hours due to a covered reason. To be covered, you must book a round-trip ticket and pay entirely with your card to be covered. Coverage provides reimbursement of up to $300 per trip with a maximum of two claims in a 12-month period.

Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful overview

Current welcome offer

Applicants for the Bountiful card can earn 125,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. TPG values this bonus at $1,050.

Rewards

You’ll earn 6 points per dollar at Marriott Bonvoy hotels and resorts, 4 points per dollar on dining and groceries and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. It’s worth noting that you’ll only earn 4 points per dollar on the first $15,000 of dining and grocery purchases per year, then you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on these purchases until the start of the next calendar year.

TPG values Marriott points at 0.84 cents each, so these earning rates represent a 5.04%, 3.36% or 1.68% return on spending. Unlike the Bevy card, you’ll earn 4 points per dollar spent at supermarkets and takeout/delivery services worldwide, not just in the U.S.

Other benefits

Cardholders can use Chase Offers to save money via rebates on their purchases. Cardholders also can get a free year of DashPass from DoorDash if they enroll by Dec. 31, 2024.

Moreover, Bountiful cardholders have several travel and shopping protections that can help them in times of need. Baggage delay insurance can reimburse up to $100 per day for up to five days when your luggage is delayed by six hours or more. Lost luggage reimbursement can provide up to $3,000 in reimbursement per passenger if your travel carrier permanently loses your luggage. Trip delay reimbursement can reimburse up to $500 of expenses per ticket when your trip is delayed overnight or by 12 hours or more.

Cardholders also have purchase protection for 120 days on new purchases made with the Bountiful card. This coverage is limited to $500 per claim and up to $50,000 per account. Lastly, there is an extended warranty benefit; this adds an extra year to U.S. manufacturers’ warranties of three years or less.

Which card should you get?

Both cards are geared toward those who stay with Marriott semiregularly, want elite status without any effort, and aim to earn Marriott points through a pair of common spending categories. While the cards are quite similar, a few differences set them apart and could make one a better fit for your wallet than the other.

The case for the Bevy card

If you’re past 5/24 and not eligible for more credit cards with Chase, that could make your decision pretty simple. Yes, you could product change from another Marriott card to the Bountiful, but you wouldn’t be eligible for a sign-up bonus.

In terms of long-term benefits and perks, the Bevy card offers much better terms on both the extended warranty and purchase protection benefits. The extended warranty benefit applies to warranties that are a full two years longer than those covered by the Bountiful card’s benefit (five years compared to three years). With purchase protection, you have 30 fewer days for coverage than with the Bountiful card but have an incredibly higher coverage value: $10,000 per claim instead of just $500.

If you buy expensive items with your credit card, these benefits can save you thousands of dollars.

The case for the Bountiful card

Assuming you’re under 5/24 with Chase and eligible for the Bountiful card, you may prefer its spending categories and the fact there are no restrictions for earning bonus points only in the U.S. with your grocery or takeout/delivery purchases. You also may enjoy the DashPass benefits for food delivery.

Regarding protections offered by your card, the Bountiful has more robust protections for trip delay, delayed baggage and lost luggage benefits. Knowing that these benefits can be triggered more easily and provide higher payouts in case you incur losses or extra expenses during a covered trip may give you extra peace of mind when you travel.

With the Bountiful, you’ll earn 4 points per dollar spent at supermarkets and with takeout/delivery services worldwide, not just in the U.S. (The Bevy offers this earning rate only at U.S. supermarkets and with U.S. takeout/delivery services.)

Bottom line

The Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card and Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card are very similar — from their welcome bonuses to ongoing perks. However, there are some key differences in how you earn points with these cards and the protections the cards offer for trips paid for and purchases made using your card.

Which one is better for you? That depends on which benefits and earning structure will better fit your lifestyle. Do you purchase high-value items and want a purchase protection policy to match? Go for the Bevy. Or do you prefer an earning structure that’s more international and travel protections that can apply more easily when something goes wrong? The Bountiful is a better choice.

Look at your purchase habits and travel style, plus look through our guide to credit card application rules and restrictions. These considerations should help you know which card or cards you may be eligible for and which may better align with your needs.
